Music Legend Victor Willis Dies at 74
The music world is mourning the loss of Victor Willis, the original lead singer and founding member of the iconic disco group Village People, who passed away on June 30, 2026, at the age of 74—just one day before what would have been his 75th birthday.
According to the family, Willis died following a brief but aggressive illness. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary career that helped shape one of the most recognizable groups in music history.
As the unmistakable voice behind timeless hits including “Y.M.C.A.,” “In the Navy,” and “Macho Man,” Willis co-wrote songs that became international classics and continue to unite generations of fans around the world. His powerful vocals, stage presence, and songwriting helped define the disco era and cemented Village People as one of the most successful groups of all time.
A founding member of Village People in the late 1970s, Willis became known for his unforgettable performances and larger-than-life stage persona. After leaving the group in 1979 to pursue a solo career, he later fought to reclaim his songwriting rights before returning to Village People in 2017, where he once again took his place as the group’s lead singer.
Today, fans across the globe are remembering not only an incredible performer but a man whose music brought people together through celebration, unity, and joy.
This loss is especially personal for me. Having been a part of the Village People family for many years, Victor’s passing has truly broken my heart. I had the privilege of working alongside the group, and I will always cherish the memories and friendships we shared.
I extend my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the entire Village People family, the band members, the crew, friends, and loyal fans around the world. Most of all, my prayers are with Victor’s beloved wife, Karen, during this incredibly difficult time. May God grant her strength, comfort, and peace in the days ahead.
Victor Willis leaves behind a remarkable legacy that will continue to inspire generations through his music. Though his voice has been silenced, the songs he gave the world will live on forever.
Rest in peace, Victor Willis. Your legacy will never be forgotten.
